Striving, Avoidance, and Spiritual Performance
Notice when the practice becomes another identity to defend.
Preparation
Before you begin
Choose one recent moment when being calm, advanced, or spiritual mattered to your image.
The illustration is a practical cue, not a required shape. Choose any safe, supported position listed for this practice.
Instructions
Practice, step by step
- 01
Recall the moment briefly and return to body sensation.
- 02
Ask: what result was I striving to produce?
- 03
Ask: what action or feeling was I avoiding?
- 04
Ask: who did I need to see me a certain way?
- 05
Name one ordinary, honest action that matters more than the identity.
What you may notice
- Shame or defensiveness
- Relief when performance is named
- A simpler relationship with practice
Common mistakes
- Using inquiry to attack yourself
- Making anti-performance a new performance
Safety & modifications
If inquiry triggers intense shame, trauma, or instability, stop and seek qualified support.
Progress indicators
Look for transfer, not fireworks.
- You admit when practice is not helping
- Necessary action becomes more important than appearing calm
Meditation education is not medical or mental-health treatment. Modify or stop whenever practice becomes destabilizing, and seek qualified support when appropriate.
